The festival is generally celebrated for around 11 days, with quite a huge spectacle taking place on the last day of Anant Chaturdasi. The festival’s reason for being celebrated is the appearance of Lord Ganesh with his mother Parvathi, from the Kailash Parvat on Earth. The earliest mentions of Ganesh is found in the Rigveda, twice, in the form of hymns. The first one of the hymns signifies Ganapati’s role as the seer of seers and as the lord of invocation. The second hymn stalls Ganapati, by saying that nothing near or afar is performed without his blessings.

The festival was first started by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the ruler of Maharashtra. It was then again re-established as a way to protest against the British ban on Hindu gatherings through its anti-public assembly legislations of 1892.

How is Ganesh Chaturthi celebrated?

The Hindu festival celebrates the arrival of Lord Ganesha on the mortal earth from mount Kailash with his mother Parvati. The festival is marked with the installation of clay idols of Ganesh- be it in homes or temporary public stages. The celebrations include chanting of hymns and prayers and brata that is fasting. The celebrations for the festival ends on the tenth day from after its start, the clay idols are carried in a public procession along with music and lot of vigour then immersed in a nearby, not stagnant water bodies such as a sea or a river.

The day after the clay idols have been immersed in water, Ganapati is believed to have gone back to Kailash to his parents- Mahadev and Parvati The festival celebrates Lord Ganesh as the God of renewals and as one who removes obstacles from the paths of our lives and is also celebrated as the deity of wisdom and intellect. The festival is celebrated in all its vigour throughout the nation, especially in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Goa, Telangana, Odisha, Gujarat Chhattisgarh, and West Bengal, and is usually celebrated in homes even in Tamil Nadu.

Dates of Ganesh Chaturthi:

When is Earth Day 2020?

With the world being just a touch away from our grasps, it is no new news for us that the world is suffering. It is suffering badly. With the increasing jungles of concrete, the greener jungles are being cut off. As a result of this, our once green and breathing Earth is slowly yet quite steadily degrading from lesser green to yet lesser green. In such times of crisis, we keep one day for acknowledging the benefits the world has given to us. In this article we are going to discuss just the initiation of such a grand notion and when is it celebrated worldwide.

Earth Day- origin:

Earth Day Wishes

Earth Day Wishes

As discussed earlier, this is a day kept exclusively to celebrate the merits of our world and to think of ways to protect them and justly so as they are fast depleting. The notion however can be dated back to quite a long time back.

It is of the time when the United States was experiencing economical as well as political struggle. In the 1970s the Vietnam War took place and the US was divided on participating in it. Side by side, the economical condition was improving, but at the cost of our dear environment. With the dawn of factories and industries, people started driving bigger cars and the factories marked the dawn of large scale air pollution.

Amidst all of such chaos, some educated individuals just like always were the pioneers to uphold the depletion of the environment that was occurring, and sought to make people aware of it. Books were published, new safer industrial laws were made and so on many more measures were taken. The first Earth Day was then celebrated

Changes that triggered the notion:

Change of any sort does not occur overnight. This change too was the result of a series of more minor changes. The most significant one of them is Rachel Carson’s bestseller Silent Spring made its debut in the 1960s. Later, Gaylord Nelson, the then US senator, was highly concerned with the massive oil spill that occurred in Santa Barbara, California. He then went on to propose the idea that there should be a day specifically aimed at spreading awareness about our mother nature and our Earth, and how they are suffering from human torture. The same humans whose lives are sustained because of the Earth and its nature.

When is it celebrated:

The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970. Senator Gaylord was the one to initiate the process. Children, adults and old alike, all came from in and around the US to take part in the rallies and awareness programs that were being held in the US at the time. Ever since then, for decades now, Earth Day is celebrated on the 22nd of April every year, to remind the people of the importance of the resources we are so lavishly using up. This year it is on a Wednesday, April 22, 2020.

Even though it is just a day, and not one day can change anything, Earth Day is still celebrated as with passing years more and more of the younger generations will come to notice the nature of our world and start taking care of it. Hopefully, it would not be too late by then.

When is Holi 2020?

The festival of colours, Holi, marks spring’s arrival. It is the festival of bonding. Everyone gets coloured in everyone else’s colour. The charm of the festival lies in that variety of colours itself. It usually occurs during Phalgun, a Bengali month, on a Full Moon day. “Kanji” and “Bhang” are two drinks specific to the festival. While Kanji is served to anyone who comes wishing on our doorsteps on the day, Bhang is a paste of cannabis leaves and such into some kind of food or drink and gives you a safe high to compliment your fun in the festival.

People pray for their families’ happiness, peace, and prosperity. During the Holika Dahan part of the festival, a bonfire consisting of dry twigs and branches and such other wastes is lit up, after deciding upon an auspicious time. Also, when the festival is celebrated the fields are in full bloom and harvest is on its way. People pray to the Gods for a good harvest as well.

Holi- the festival:

As legend has it, the festival of Holi is based on a story portraying the triumph of Good over Evil. Once there was a King named Hirannakashyap, who wanted his people to worship him. He was the kind of the Asuras and the Daityas, the literal meaning of his name being “clothed in Gold.” However, his son was a devotee of Lord Vishu.

The King could not stand the idea of it and attempted many times to make him understand otherwise. As one of his final attempts, the ruthless king sent his sister Holika, who was blessed by the Gods to be immune to fire, to kill Prahlad, his son and a blind devotee of Lord Vishnu. Holika sat with Prahlad in the middle of a raging fire plotting that she would survive while the boy perished. However, the boon was applicable only when she was to be touched by fire alone. Using this loophole, Lord Vishu protected Prahlad, saving him from the fire, while Holika died in her self made conspiracy. Hirannakashyap too was then killed by another incarnation of Lord Vishnu, known as Narasimha.

Since then, people light a bonfire on the eve of the festival, representing the death of Holika, symbolic of Good’s victory over Evil. The day after is celebrated as Holi.

Holika Dahan and Holi timings:

Astrologically speaking, the Holika Dahan festival is not to be started before sunset. It is to be started only at a particular time after the sunset on Purnima tithi. The ideal time would be at Pradoshkal, the time when day and night are said to meet. The celebration signifies Holika, Hirannakashyap’s sister’s, death, symbolic of Good’s win over the Evil.

  • Holika Dahan Muhurta – 18:22 to 20:49
  • Bhadra Punchha – 09:37 to 10:38
  • Bhadra Mukha – 10:38 to 12:19
  • Rangwali Holi – 10th March
  • Purnima Tithi Begins – 03:03 (9th March)

Once Holika Dahan is completed, the next day, everyone gets busy to get died in each other’s colours, just for once forgetting the diversity that they are. By afternoon the festival comes to an end after which meals are prepared for the evening and the night that is to come. Holi is celebrated throughout the country just in ways and names that are different from each other, keeping the vibe the same.

When is Janmashtami 2020?

Janmashtami is a festival commemorating the birth of Lord Krishna in our mortal world. Krishna here is a symbol of love and intellect and the festival brings a spirit of new beginnings and renewals, birth spiritually as well as in the external world. Every year millions of people nationwide and even worldwide celebrate the festival with great enthusiasm and vigour. The incarnation of Lord Vishnu teaches us that we all have an unkempt power within us, that helps us go and face the everyday world. The more we polish it, the better our life becomes with the help of it. This sense of divine attachment too brings a sense of connection with the festival along with the playful and fun-loving nature of the incarnation of God.

Janmashtami

Janmashtami- the story behind it:

Janmashtami is the celebration of Lord Krishna’s birth, which is “janma” on the eighth day of, which signifies “ Ashtami”. Now the story goes like this, the evil King Kamsa, marries off his sister with the Yuda King, Vasudeva. After the marriage, when Kamsa insisted that he be the one to drive the marriage chariot, the sky opens up and there is a prophecy. The prophecy says that Devaki’s eighth child was to be the reason of Kamsa’s death and would hence put an end to his tyrannous rule.

After hearing this Kamsa gets infuriated and orders to imprison Devaki and Vasudeva, and even plans on killing Devaki but only stops when Vasudeva promises to give up every single of their child to him. In the following days, they spend their lives in Kamsa’s dungeons and can do nothing but look on as Kamsa murders one child after another.

However, before the eight children were born, Lord Vishnu comes in front of the couple and informs them that he is their eighth child and suggests Vasudeva on how to take him to Vrindaban where the village head, Nanda along with his wife, Yashoda, are waiting for the arrival of the baby. Through divine intervention, the guards of the prison fall asleep and the doors open automatically as Vasudeva takes his newborn child to Vrindaban. And even as the sky gets blacker and the weather changes for the worse, through a series of more divine interventions, the child safely reaches the destination.

What are the traditions involved?

More than millions of people celebrate the festival worldwide every year. There are many ways as to how it is celebrated in different communities and states. One of them includes a tradition where they fast until the birth of the deity. Another is where once the morning hours of the day start, people bathe images of the incarnation of Lord Vishnu and put new clothes on it. In other communities such as in Maharashtra, an event of Dahi Handi is performed where there is a container of yogurt (Dahi) kept at the top suspended from a horizontal rope and a people’s pyramid is formed to reach out to the container and break it, just as Krishna would do in the days of his infancy. The event celebrates the fondness that Krishna had for butter and yogurt.

The celebrations reach their full vigour in Mathura and Vrindaban, where Krishna had enjoyed his infancy and the early ages of his youth.

Dates of Janmashtami 2020:

The date of Janmashtami is on 11th August 2020

  • Nishita Puja Time– 00:04 to 00:48

When is Eid 2020?

Eid Al Fitr is the festival celebrating the end to the fasting of the entire month of the Ramadan. It is believed that God blesses and rewards the people for their patience and the faith they have in God. The festival is celebrated for two to three days at the end of the holy month and no one can fast during these two to three days. This is an article that discusses the details of the festival and talks about the dates as to when it is to be celebrated in this year of 2020.

Eid- the legends about it:

Eid

As legend has it, the festival was started by Muhammad, an Islamic prophet soon after he had migrated from Mecca. It is said that when Muhammad had left Mecca, he along with a companion of his Anas were passing through Medina, some people had gained Muhammad’s interests and he talked to them. The people were celebrating and were busy in the merrymaking when Muhammad preached and taught them, that God had fixed two days in the year for such extensive merriment and entertainment- at the end of the holy month of Ramadan. The festivals were called Eid al Fitr and Eid al Adha. Since then, the festivals have been celebrated as is today.

How is it celebrated:

It is a religious festival and is celebrated across nations and worldwide amongst all Muslim communities. During the days of the festivals, people start their mornings with the Eid Prayer and then go on to wish each other by the age-old customary greetings of “Eid Mubarak”. People buy new clothes and enjoy the days with their family members, spending the days in enjoyment and recreational activities. Fasting during these two days is strictly not allowed.

  • Some of the other rules involved are as follows:
  • Taking a bath, that performs some sort of ablution before sitting down to pray.
  • Using a toothbrush or as the people would call it, the Miswaak.
  • Eating an odd number of dates before they sit for the prayer.
  • Make it mandatory to check whether you have paid the Zakat, before going to pray.
  • Do not forget the “Takbeerat” before and after the Eid prayer.

People dress up in their new and the best outfits and apply perfume. No one wants to look bad on these auspicious days. The days are quite important in the religious calendar of the Muslim community.

Dates associated with Eid 2020:

Eid al Fitr starts on the evening of 23rd May 2020, Saturday and ends on the evening of 24th May 2020, Sunday.

The most engaging and the best part of the celebrations is that people get to spend time with their near and dear ones- their family and friends. The religion, however, teaches and preaches not to forget the less privileged sections of the society and spend the celebration along with them, sharing the entertainment and vibrancy of the two days. It teaches us that all and everyone is our “Duas.”

When is Friendship Day 2020?

We need people in our lives with whom we can talk our hearts out. In our lives, some are just acquaintances while others are close ones. Friendship is one such important relationship with our close ones. Friends play a significant role in our lives. They make us happy, support us, motivate us, make our lives stress free, understand us and helps us to grow. With times changing, it has become very difficult to spend quality time with friends every day. As we grow old and become occupied in other things in life, the bond loosens often. Friendship day is the day we celebrate the bond of love and reminisce about the quality times spent together and make unforgettable memories.

How did friendship day begin to be celebrated?

Friendship Day

Celebrating this bond of friendship dates back to the time of Mahabharata, composed during the 4th century. Back then, friendship day was observed in the province of Ayodhya, when Sudama arrived in the lord Krishna’s kingdom after many years. Now, friendship day is observed on different dates in different countries. The world friendship crusade proposed the celebration of friendship day to be on 30th July. The organisation is an international one that campaigns supporting friendship as a way of building a culture of peace. In India, however, the day is observed on the first Sunday of August, every year. Friendship day is the day when we commemorate the presence of special people in our lives, whom we call friends. the United Nations announced 30th July to be celebrated as a global friendship day on 27th April. The custom of celebrating friendship day was initiated by Joyce Hall, who intended to celebrate the day on 2 August. The day has been declared as a holiday.

Friendship day celebrations

Friends welcome each other on this great day and exchange tokens of love. The day begins with humble greetings between people. The day has largely been commercialised nowadays. Several companies have started making greeting cards and sell gifts on this day. Friendship day is of so much importance because friends are an important part of our lives. Without friends, people will end up becoming lonely and lost. Friends bring joy in our lives and cheer us up. We love spending time with our friends. Hence, friendship day is necessary to be celebrated. Children’s socialising skills develop only when they communicate and interact with a lot of other children. Without friends, they fail to learn and experience basic things. Children who cannot make friends end up being alone and feel neglected.

Friendship is never complicated. All one needs to do is express his gratitude and feelings towards his friends. In this digitalised world, people have started making videos for their friends. Some even tweet, some share messages, quotes and post pictures on social media to make their friends realise their importance and how much are they adored.

Additionally, this day is celebrated to wipe out distance and misunderstanding between friends. Though none of the 365 days is less important than friendship day, the first Sunday of August has been given special attention for observing the bond among friends. Undoubtedly, for celebrating friendship, we don’t need a special day to express our love for them.

When is Easter 2020

Easter is a celebration of faith and believes that we have in our God. The backdrop to the festival is how Jesus Christ was rejuvenated from the dead and went up to heaven. It celebrates the rejuvenation that even to date teaches us not to lose faith in humanity and serve without expectations. The Easter Sunday marks off the beginning of the Holy week even if it is not a part of it and denotes the end of the forty days of Lent.

Easter is one of the oldest and one of the most important Christian celebrations. The other popular branches of the tradition, such as the Easter Bunny and such are however pagan inclusions.

Easter- the tradition:

When is Easter

The story of Easter celebrates the rejuvenation of Christ from death. According to the legends, the story goes somewhat like this that at the time, the council members concerned with Jesus’ growing popularity were searching for ways to do away with him. However, they were unable to formulate a plan, and just then one of Jesus’ disciples driven by the lust of materialistic pleasure, agreed to betray Jesus and tell the priests about the right time to strike. That evening Jesus told his disciples how his end was near and how the reason for his death would be a betrayal by one of his disciples.

After having his supper with his disciples that evening the son of God, went to pray, shortly after which he was arrested by Jewish guards. He was crucified after facing much mockery and making the council face many dilemmas as well as he did not even speak to defend himself and as time passed by, the important council members started to realise that they had misread the situation and he indeed was the son of the God.

Nevertheless, Jesus was crucified and buried in an abandoned tomb. Thereafter some of his women disciples visited the cave to put spices on the dead body to stop it from smelling and found the tomb empty. Thereafter the Christ on many occasions marked his presence by appearing in front of his disciples, telling them how he was yet to go to heaven and once he did so, he would send a Holy Spirit to look after them. Jesus kept his word and by the Holy Spirit’s power, the disciples came to speak and understand various other languages as well, thus spreading the beliefs of Christianity across nations.

How are the dates calculated?

The dates of the festival change each year. A long time back, around some 300 AD the Council of Nicaea had decided that Easter may fall on the first Sunday that falls after the first full moon that occurs after or on the day of the vernal equinox. The date of Easter thus usually falls between March and April.

This year the date for Easter is fixed as April 12th, 2020, Sunday.

It is, thus, how the festival of Easter came to be celebrated and how the tradition is kept alive and how even after all these years. It is a festival of rejoicing about how our Messiah was rejuvenated from death and taught us the art of forgiveness throughout and even after his life.

A cupcake bouquet

But you can take the idea one step further by converting it into an edible bouquet of cupcakes. It’s incredibly simple to make and the materials are easily available. You’ll need the following materials: cupcakes, frosting, a piping bag with an open star tip, green tissue paper, clear tape, a pretty flower pot, a styrofoam ball, and a few toothpicks. First, you need to bake the cupcakes and prepare the frosting. You can decide the flavor of the cake and frosting depending on your mother’s preferences. Next, fill the piping bag with frosting and pipe out a rose on the top of the cupcake. After frosting, place the cupcakes in the refrigerator and move on to the styrofoam base. Place a styrofoam ball into a flower pot and attach toothpicks on the sides. The toothpicks should be attached at 45° angle to prevent the cupcakes from falling off.  Next, take out the cupcakes from the refrigerator and slide them onto the toothpicks. Cover as much space as you can. When it’s done, cover up the remaining empty space with green tissue paper to give the appearance of leaves.

Diwali is comprised of innumerable reasons like we have mentioned. However, there is one story that makes way for the iconic Happy Diwali Story that we, as children have grown up listening to. The festival is all about the return of Lord Rama (A Reincarnation of Lord Vishnu) to his kingdom, Ajodhya. Diwali was first mentioned in one of the greatest epics of ancient India, The Ramayana. This famous epic was composed by author Valmiki in the Sanskrit language. It is an epic poem to be precise that narrates the struggle of the Divine Prince, Lord Rama and his journey to Lanka to rescue his wife. It is believed that Lord Rama’s wife had been abducted by the demon king of Lanka, Ravana.

The poem describes the journey of Lord Rama and his fourteen years of exile to a forest, to live as a sage, giving up all the royalties of a prince. In his journey, he was not alone who had been sent to exile, his wife Sita and his half-brother Lakshman had decided to go along with Lord Rama. Upon his beginning of life as a sage, everything was good until the time Ravana had abducted Sita for his younger sister was hurt by Lakshman. Also, it is clearly mentioned that when Sita’s husband choosing ceremony was taking place, the hosts had insulted Ravana who was present there. His pride had been hurt that day and in due course, it took the form of something extreme. His anger had grown to such heights that upon his sisters complain, he cunningly captured Sita and kept her captive at Ashoka Vatic at present-day Sri Lanka. It was a grave mistake of Ravana for it instilled a war between the two clans. Although, Ravana was a smart, strong king he had a weakness.

Lord Rama had knowledge about it through Ravana’s own brother confessing to him. Therefore, Lord Rama along with his army of monkey’s, Lord Lakshman, Lord Hanuman, the King of the Ape Kingdom and other powerful associates fighting by his side, Lord Rama was successfully able to defeat the demon king and bring his wife, Sita, back home. Therefore, upon his arrival to his kingdom, Ajodhya, after sundown, his kingdom welcomed him with flowers and gifts and made sure there was light. The entire kingdom of Ajodhya was lit up with clay lamps or Diya’s(Download Diya Images). The lighting up of the kingdom not only marked as a way of providing light, but it also had a deep meaning to it. The light signified Lord Rama’s victory over evil.
